Banchory is the largest town in the Dee Valley, making it an ideal base from which to sample all that this beautiful area has to offer. The name Banchory derives from the Gaelic Beannchar, or 'blessed place' and is set amongst some of the best scenery in Scotland.
Twenty miles from Aberdeen, the town has kept its traditional flavour, with family-run individual shops and hotels as well as all the modern facilities a visitor should need. The Bridge of Feugh is the heart of the town, where the river Dee is wonderfully clear and visibly full of salmon. There is a small museum giving visitors an introduction to this historic area, and of course excellent golf courses nearby.
There are two famous castles close to Banchory. Crathes Castle is found just east of Banchory, with fairytale turrets and painted Jacobean ceilings. Between Peterculter and Banchory is Drum Castle with its 13th Century tower, the oldest intact in Scotland.
