Stonehaven lies on the coast 15 miles south of Aberdeen, and is famous for the dramatic and beautiful ruin of Dunnottar Castle high on the rugged clifftops. In 1297 'Braveheart' William Wallace laid siege to the castle, burning down the chapel with an English garrison inside.
But there is more to Stonehaven than just the castle. This small but delightful fishing town has a picturesque harbour with pubs and shops, and hosts a summer habour festival complete with rafting competition.
There is a tourist information centre in Allardice Street.
Hogmanay (New Year) sees the 'Fireballs' festival, a strange tradition where locals parade through the town swinging flaming wire 'balls' to ensure good luck. This attracts thousands of visitors, although they would be well advised to stand well back!
Stonehaven golf club has a course which follows the clifftops, with stunning sea views to the castle, and is one of many making this area ideal for a golfing holiday. The spectacular cliffside Fowlsheugh RSPB reserve is just down the coast and is home to around 130,000 breeding seabirds in the spring and summer, including fulmar and puffin.
