The town of Menai Bridge is the gateway to Anglesey across the fast-flowing waters of the Menai Straits.
It is linked to the mainland by the tremendous Menai Suspension Bridge, an iconic feature of Anglesey life built by the famous engineer Thomas Telford and completed in 1826. The town was renamed in its honour (and still called Porthaethwy in Welsh). The history of this impressive feat of structural engineering is told at the bridges exhibition at the Menai Heritage Experience, which also celebrates the nearby Britannia Bridge at Llanfairpwll.
The town itself is a pleasant introduction to the island, with many fine Victorian buildings and plenty of shops, pubs and amenities. Just outside Menai Bridge is the family animal attraction of Pili Palas Nature World.
