The attractive port of Arbroath is a historic town, notable for its working fishing harbour and beautiful ruined Abbey.
The strong links to the sea can be seen everywhere in the town, and also sampled in the famous local delicacy of Arbroath Smokies, a distinctive and delicious smoked haddock. The Arbroath Signal Tower Museum celebrates this maritime heritage, in the setting of the impressive on-shore station for the Bell lighthouse, itself located some 11 miles offshore on a notoriously treacherous rock.
Beautiful Abroath Abbey has an important place in Scottish history, being the place where the crucial 'Letter' or 'Declaration of Arbroath' was drawn up on behalf of Robert the Bruce by Scottish nobles in 1320. It was addressed to the then Pope, and asked him to pressurise Edward II of England to recognise Scottish independence.
Near Arbroath is the St Vigeans museum of Pictish stones, containing a large number of lovely and historically important carvings of people, animals and Celtic designs dating from around the 800s AD.
