Brechin is a small and fine town, which should actually be termed a 'city' despite its size, due to the presence of its Cathedral.
Brechin Cathedral has ancient origins, the oldest parts dating back to the 8th century AD. Most dates from the 13th And 14th centuries, but its most remarkable feature is the 11th century round tower, which was once free-standing and is a type more commonly seen in Ireland.
The Brechin Castle Centre is a popular country park, also housing a garden centre and a range of children's' activities. Close by is the Pictavia attraction, which brings the ancient Pictish history of Angus alive through a multi-media interactive exhibition. You can learn more about later history at the Brechin Town House Museum.
The Caledonian steam and diesel railway runs wonderful heritage train trips from the lovely Victorian station in Brechin through a 4-mile stretch eastwards to Bridge of Dun.
North of Brechin is the stunningly beautiful ruined Edzell Castle, famed for its magnificent and unique formal walled gardens.
