Quaint Glamis is a picture-postcard village of 18th century stone, thatched and white-washed buildings. It is also the estate village for Glamis Castle.
Grand and imposing, Glamis castle is of the most famous in Scotland, and the ancestral home of the late Queen Mother. Its rich history dates back around 1,000 years, and the splendid turreted fairytale appearance of the current castle dates from the 17th and 18th centuries. In William Shakespeare's Macbeth King Duncan was murdered at Glamis, and while this didn't actually happen, the castle has seen enough intrigue and ghost stories, not to mention a real royal assassination, to more than make up for the fact.
In the village, the Angus folk museum shows the contrasting simple life of the people who would have worked the estate land in past times. Set in a row of cottages, the museum reconstructs domestic scenes from rural family life, as well as agricultural history.
