Angus Tourist Information
Welcome to Angus ...
The historic and beautiful region of Angus is in the heart of Scotland, and offers everything from fishing towns and sandy beaches, to highland glens and rugged mountains.
The area has a long and rich history, from its Pictish origins through to the formation of Scotland as a nation state - as set out in the pivotal Declaration of Arbroath in the 14th century. Arbroath Abbey, where the declaration was drawn up, is now a atmospheric ruined monastery.
Angus is dotted with other notable historic attractions for the tourist to visit, such as Glamis Castle, one of Scotland's most famous and most (allegedly) haunted castles. Edzell Castle is a beautiful 16th century ruin with a stunning formal walled garden. J.M. Barrie, creator of Peter Pan, grew up in the pretty town of Kirriemuir which now has a museum dedicated to his life and works.
Along the East Scotland coast, stretching north from the neighbouring city of Dundee, are the fishing towns of Arbroath and Montrose, and some of the best beaches in Scotland - such as the wonderful golden sands of Lunan Bay. However, for many the Carnoustie Championship golf course is the highlight of the coastal area.
Inland, Angus boasts a number of glens of particular highland beauty, leading up to the mountains of the Braes of Angus in the Cairngorms National Park. Glen Clova, Glen Doll and Glen Esk are some of the most lovely, with rushing mountain rivers flowing through a scenic area known for the traditional Scottish pastimes of hunting and fishing.
