The handsome town of Kirriemuir is set close to the beautiful Braes of Angus, and is the ideal base from which to explore the scenic Angus Glens, such as Glen Clova, which cut through the mountains.
Built largely from a distinctive red sandstone, the town has attractive historic streets and plenty of attractions. J.M. Barrie was born here in 1860, a fact celebrated by a statue of his creation Peter Pan in the town centre. His former family home was a humble cottage which now houses an exhibition dedicated to his life and Never-Never Land, which is perfect for children.
Barrie donated a Camera Obscura to Kirriemuir, one of only a handful still in operation, which is open to the public and offers splendid views of the surrounding countryside.
The award-winning 'Gateway to the Glens' museum is set in the attractive old Town House building, and has exhibitions both on the history of Kirriemuir and the Angus Glens. Visitors can also learn about the natural history, geology and archaeology of these beautiful valleys. The museum also houses the local tourist information centre.
