The historic port of Montrose is a bustling seaside town set on the beautiful Angus coastline.
The town has a wide and elegant high street, and some attractive buildings in its old centre. Its heritage is closely linked with the sea, firstly in fishing, and more recently it has prospered from serving the North Sea oil industry. The fine Victorian Montrose museum has a wide range of exhibits, many focussing on the town's maritime history.
Montrose is also notable for its tidal basin, a large saltwater lagoon behind the town linked to the sea by a narrow inlet. Its mudflats and reed beds are important for coastal wildlife, such as migratory geese and wading birds.
To the south is the beautiful wide beach of Lunan bay. Dunes and cliffs lead down to wonderful golden sands, and the beach is popular with sightseers, surfers and fishermen. The ruins of the 11th century Red Castle are set on the shoreline.
Other historic sights nearby include the House of Dun, a lovely 18th century mansion set in beautiful gardens, and the Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre, a museum telling the story of Britain's first operational military airfield, established in 1913.
