Inveraray is an attractive town of pretty, white-painted buildings set on the shores of the beautiful Loch Fyne.
The town was rebuilt in the 18th century by the Dukes of Argyll, who had their seat at Inveraray Castle, an imposing round-turreted French style chateau built in grey stone. The castle is set in lovely grounds with extensive views over the loch and beautiful surrounding countryside.
There are two museums in the town, Inverary Jail and courthouse and the Maritime Museum, telling the story of the town's links with the sea. Close by is Auchindrain Museum, a historic farming village brought back to life where visitors can enter homes furnished as they would have been in past times.
To the north, on the banks of Loch Awe, is the stunning Kilchurn Castle, a ruined fortress in one of the most picturesque settings in Scotland.
Inveraray has a tourist information centre.
