The Isle of Mull is an island of breathtaking beauty lying off the west coast of Argyll across the Firth of Lorn.
Accessible by ferry from Oban, Lochaline, or Kilchoan, the island has rugged mountains, pretty towns and villages and stunning views of the island and across the water to some of Scotland's most spectacular scenery.
Blessed with amazing geology, Mull and its surrounding islands have some wonderful natural attractions. The Island of Staffa with its basalt columns and awe-inspiring Fingal's Cave was the inspiration for Mendelssohn's Hebridean Overture. Other natural wonders include MacKinnon's Cave, the Carsaig Arches and the many beautiful white sandy beaches - Calgary, Kilvickeon and Croig being just some of the best on the island.
From Mull, passenger boats travel to the nearby Isle of Iona, and also the tiny islands of Lunga and Ulva.
Also famed for its diversity of wildlife, Mull is home to the largest population of breeding white tailed sea eagles in Britain. Golden eagles, puffin, deer, otters, dolphins and whales can be also seen on the island. The Wild Isles website brings together the many wildlife tour operators who show visitors the natural riches that Mull has to offer, and the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust have a visitor centre in Tobermory for those wanting to know more about these marine mammals.
Mull also has a great many man-made attractions. From the ferry port at Craignure, which has a tourist information centre, a narrow gauge railway runs to the magnificent baronial style castle of Torosay, set in beautiful gardens.
Just across the water is the imposing Duart Castle, the oldest inhabited castle on Mull, built in a defensive position on the clifftop overlooking the Sound of Mull.
The pretty fishing port of Tobermory with its colourful cottages is the capital of the island, with its own distillery - and now perhaps better known as the setting for the BBC Children's programme Tobermory.
