The ancient capital of the kingdom of Dalriada, Kilmartin is set in perhaps Scotland's most important historical landscape.
The village is in the centre of Kilmartin Glen, which has around 350 ancient monuments dating from Mesolithic and Neolithic eras through to the Iron and Bronze ages and beyond. These include standing stones, carvings, burial sites and the remains of 4 castles. Start at the Kilmartin House Museum which has an audio-visual exhibition designed to explain the historical riches of the area.
The nearby ruined fortress of Dunadd was where the Scottish ruled Dalriada from around 500AD. Set on a craggy outcrop in a defensive position overlooking the Glen, this lovely setting affords panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
Just to the North of Kilmartin is the 16th century Carnasserie Castle, now a stark but atmospheric ruin.
