Oban is the largest town in the Western Highlands, a popular fishing port which gained prosperity in Victorian times due to the building of good railway links to Glasgow.
Gateway to the nearby islands of Mull, Islay, Coll, Tiree and beyond with its regular ferry services, the town is also a good base for exploring the scenic Argyll and Bute area.
This handsome town also has many attractions that make it well worth a visit. Sitting high above the town is McCaig's Tower, an unusual stone construction similar to the Colosseum in Rome, commissioned by a local banker in 1897. Today a walk up the steep hill affords great views. The town also has its own distillery and museum.
However, most visitors come for the breathtaking local scenery - from the mountains of Lorn to the stunning lakes. Just north of Oban boat trips run from Taynuilt into the stunning and remote Loch Etive, largely inaccessible by road. There are also many historic sites, such as the castles of Dunollie, Kilchurn and Dunstaffnage - said to be the home of the Stone of Destiny before it was taken to London and finally Edinburgh.
