At the southern tip of the Kintyre peninsula is the attractive and appropriately named town of Southend.
Attached to the mainland but with all the feel of a Hebridian island, this area is known as the Mull of Kintyre, which inspired the 1977 song by Paul McCartney and Wings.
The area has some beautiful scenery, such as the nearby Dunaverty Bay with its long sandy beach and rocky outcrops. The Keil Caves are another natural attraction, and the Kintyre Way footpath passes nearby. From the very tip of the Mull there are spectacular views over to Northern Ireland.
Famed as the point where St Columba first set foot on Scotland in 563AD and later founded the early Christian Church, this is marked by the ruin of Columba's chapel. There are also intriguing stone footprints carved into the rock which are said to be the Saint's own imprints.
