The inventor of the first steam engine ?
Dartmouth born Thomas Newcomen was the inventor of the Atmospheric Steam Engine in 1712. The one here at Dartmouth was designed to pump water out of mines. The invention is partly responsible for the Industrial Revolution.
The building is now the Tourist Information Centre, which has a model of the engine.
