Crowning place of kings.
This beautiful castellated mansion dates from the turn on the 19th century, but Scone was been a crucially important place to the Scots centuries before it was built. The Stone of Destiny, on which ancient Scottish and later, English and British monarchs were crowned was brought here in the dark ages. Amongst those crowned in Scone are Kenneth Mac Alpin, Macbeth, and Robert the Bruce. By his time however, the Scone had been taken by the English to Westminster Abbey where it was to remain until 1996 when it was returned to the Scottish people, this time in Edinburgh. A replica of the stone now sits at Scone. Later a priory and abbey were built on the site, before the Murray family built the current house. The Palace today has an elegant simple exterior, but a grand and sumptuous interior with beautiful furnishings and artwork. There are also lovely grounds, complete with a maze and adventure playground.
