Local museum in a wonderful neo-classical building.
This fine museum was founded in the mid-19th century and was one of the first to be housed in a purpose-built structure. Its extensive collection describes local life from prehistoric times onwards, and there are excellent Pictish carvings and artefacts from the Jacobite uprising. However, its main focus is the maritime heritage of Montrose, particularly the fishing and whaling industries which brought great prosperity to the town.
