Splendid 19th century House displaying artworks from the National Portrait Gallery.
This ancient estate was transformed in the Victorian era when the historic residence was transformed into a comfortable country house with the outward architectural features of a fairytale castle. The restored 19th century interiors are now the sumptuous backdrop to artworks on loan from the National Portrait Gallery, furniture from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and sculpture from the Royal Academy of Arts. There is also an exhibition dedicated to its previous incarnation as Lowther College public school for girls in the 20th century. There are also beautiful grounds, a cafe and a childrens play area. The grounds contain the poignant former WWI training trenches used for soldiers destined to take part in that tragic conflict.
