Former coal mine, now preserved as a museum.
This heritage mine was opened in the 1920s and continued working right up until the 1960s. It was a deep mine, with workings extending down to 2,500 feet (800m), the deepest in Wales. It was also known for its frequent accidents, with the frightening nickname of the Slaughterhouse. The museum tells the story of coal mining at the Cefn Coed Colliery and throughout South Wales. Its preserved buildings include one of the few winding hoist engines still in existence, with an iconic turning wheel atop a tower, once such a common site in this part of Wales.
