Biggleswade is a small regional centre for the surrounding villages, sited on the River Ivel. An old established town, Biggleswade dates back to the Roman era. In 1785 a fire that started at the Crown Inn swept through the town destroying almost a third of the houses. Today it is a popular place to live, as commuting into London is easy on the good rail service.
There is a market on Thursdays and a larger market every Saturday in the rather pleasant Market Square. Facilities in the town include a sports centre as well as a swimming pool.
