Once part of the parish of Old
Windsor, Sunningdale is a large village close to the
Surrey border. Like neighbouring Ascot, Sunningdale is known
for its magnificent displays of trees and shrubs, particularly
banks of rhododendrons.
Prince William, Duke of Cumberland
( the son of George II ) lived in the area and is commemorated
by an obelisk in Windsor Great Park.
Sunningdale and nearby Wentworth
are famous as the location of a superb golf courses, which
stage major championships, and always popular.
The village, lying 24 miles west
of London, is also known as the location of the Sunningdale
Agreement. Signed at the Civil Service Staff College (now
the National School of Government) at Sunningdale Park in
1973, this attempted to solve the troubles in Northern Ireland
by forcing the nationalists to share power with the unionists.
However, Unionist opposition, Provisional IRA violence and
a loyalist general strike caused the collapse of the agreement
in 1974.
