Waltham St Lawrence, centred
around its cattle pond, is one of the most westerly parishes
in the borough.
There are many picturesque buildings
in the small village, including the timber-framed Bell Inn. A
plaque on the side of this historic public house explains
how Ralph Newbery, citizen and stationer of London, bequeathed
the Bell Inn for the benefit of the Parish of Waltham St Lawrence
in 1608.
Parts of the adjacent parish
church of St Lawrence, mentioned in the Domesday Book, date
back 850 years.
A splendid lychgate provides
access to the churchyard and towering over this is a vast
yew tree, planted in 1635.
