Abertillery is a traditional Welsh town surrounded by beautiful valleys scenery great for walking.
This area of Wales was shaped by the coal, iron and other industries which boomed in the 19th and 20th centuries and had a massive impact on life for the local people. Just to the south of the town is the former Six Bells colliery, where a impressive statue of a coal miner over 12m high is a poignant memorial to workers who lost their lives in the pit.
Abertillery and District Museum tells the story of the town, from prehistoric times onward, with a particular focus on the local coal mining and iron industries.
The town today is also a cultural hub for Blaenau Gwent, with the recently refurbished The Met centre offering music, dance and more, and the annual Abertillery Blues Festival which attracts aficionados from all over the globe.
