Ebbw Vale is the largest town in Blaenau Gwent, with a proud industrial history of coal and iron working. The Ebbw Vale Steelworks is now gone, but it was once the largest in Europe.
Now in the process of regenerating these iconic industrial areas for a new future, the town also looks back to its past in the collections of the Ebbw Vale Works Archive Museum.
The area also has a strong connection to working class political reform and socialist movements. In 1929 former local coal miner and leading figure of the Labour Party, Aneurin 'Nye' Bevan became MP - a post he would hold for the rest of his life. He was succeeded by Labour leader Michael Foot in 1960.
In more recent times the area has seen a number of new attractions spring up in the Festival Park area, which hosted the Ebbw Vale Garden Festival in 1992. These include an outlet shopping centre, a Supertubing adventure experience and an owl sanctuary.
