Blaenau Gwent Tourist Information

Welcome to Blaenau Gwent ...
At the head of the Welsh valleys and the fringes of the Brecon Beacons National Park, the small county of Blaenau Gwent is a scenic area of steep and rolling hills offering panoramic views.

But the valleys were not always this peaceful. In the 18th and 19th century the booming coal and iron industry changed everything, shaping the landscape and the people who lived here forever. The countryside is now littered with industrial sites and machinery preserved as historical monuments to this era, including the Sirhowy Ironworks and Nantyglo Roundhouses.

The towns and villages of the Ebbw and Sirhowy Valleys are also rich in mining heritage, and the working classes fuelled the Chartist movement in the 19th century, and the development of the Labour Party in the 20th. Aneurin 'Nye' Bevan, founder of the National Health Service, was born in Tredegar, as was Neil Kinnock. Both Nye Bevan and Michael Foot were once the local MP for Ebbw Vale.

Beyond the wonderful open spaces, the area also has a number of other attractions, such as outdoor activities, museums and great shopping opportunities.
