The market town of Tredegar is in the heart of the Sirhowy Valley, a traditional town surrounded by rolling Welsh countryside.
Tredegar's most notable feature is the distinctive clock tower in its centre. Built in 1858 it is set in the centre of a circle with streets fanning out in all directions.
The town's most famous son is Aneurin 'Nye' Bevan MP (1897 - 1960), a local miner who started working in the coal pits at the age of 13. He rose to a prominent position in the Labour Party and became famous as the Father of the British National Heath Service. He is remembered today in the monumental Aneurin Bevan Memorial Stones. Neil Kinnock (now Baron Kinnock) was born in Tredegar in 1942, a miners son who became leader of the Labour Party in opposition.
Other places of interest include Bedwellty House and Park, an graceful Georgian house built for the local ironmaster. Up on the steep valley side is found the Bedwellty Pits Incline Engine, eerie abandoned machinery providing historic interest in a scenic area. Nearby Parc Bryn Bach has a wide range of outdoor activities and attractions, centred around an attractive lake.
