The tiny village of Kenfig, north of Porthcawl, is surrounded by breath-taking dunes a ruined castle, and a buried medieval town lost beneath the sands.
This wonderful landscape of sand dunes, grassland and lake are designated a National Nature Reserve due the importance of this unspoilt habitat to plant and animal life. It is a great place for walking, wild-life watching and taking in the coastal scenery.
The history of the area is equally beguiling. Founded by the Normans, Kenfig was once a thriving medieval town. However it suffered from attack from the native Welsh peoples, despite the 12th century castle, and finally from violent storms and drifting sands. It was abandoned by the late 15th century but continues to fascinate, most recently being excavated by the Channel 4 TV programme Time Team in 2011.
