The busy town of Maesteg was once at the heart of the iron and coal mining industries that transformed the Llynfi valley and the whole of South Wales.
Evidence of its 19th century industrial heritage can still be seen today, with a former ironworks transformed into a sports centre, and more restoration and renovation planned to preserve this link with the past. There are also some imposing Victorian civic buildings such as the old town hall.
Travelling north up the valley finds a fantastic unspoilt scenery of hills and forests. The steep-sided valleys and peaceful upland scenery are great places for walking and other outdoor activities.
