Bristol
Bristol, the UK's 8th largest
city, lies 105 miles to west of London and is in its own city
area, previously it was part of Avon - which now no longer
exists.
The city area is on the River
Avon, a tributary of the River Severn and has a short coastline
on the Severn Estuary (which flows into the Bristol Channel).
Bristol is the most populous
city in the southwest of England and one of its main centres
of employment, education and culture.
Famous for its docks there are
plenty of attractions to visit. including the ss Great Britain,
both in the city itself and the area around it.
The county
was historically controlled by the Bishops of Durham - known
as the Prince Bishops. As
the Durham estate included some outside areas the central
part was distinguished from the rest as 'Bristol'.
