South BuckinghamshireAmersham

Amersham, a town of two halves, Amersham Old town, a historic market town and Amersham-on-the-Hill, near the railway station.

Old Amersham  is an old market town  with a wide High Street, in the middle is the Market Hall. On a hill above Amersham is The Martyrs' Memorial to those burnt at the stake for religious beliefs during the reign of Queen Mary. In the  17th century prominent Quakers settled in the area

The town has links to London,  the last stop on the Metropolitan Line, part of the original Metroland, linking commuters to London.

Developers built houses and shops near the station to form modern day Amersham-on-the-Hill. The town has a shopping centre and a leisure complex

Good as a centre for touring the area, and walks in the Chiltern Hills, A413 north-west, try at Wendover for nearby Coombe Hill. Little Missenden on the way is a nice village with 12th century wall paintings in the church.
