In the heart of the Rhymney Valley is the town of Blackwood, with a long mining heritage in common with many of the valleys towns and villages in the area.
The town has some striking features, such as the modern Chartist Bridge. This feat of modern engineering is a fantastic cable-stayed bridge which has become a local landmark. The name commorates Blackwood's historical links with the 19th Chartist movement which demanded political equality for the working classes.
The Blackwood Miners Institute was built in the 1920s and is an attractive building now used as a venue for a wide range of music, theatre, cinema, comedy and other events.
