The small town of Nelson is found in the Taff Bargoed Valley, one of the historic mining valleys of South Wales.
It is also the setting for Llancaiach Fawr Manor, a lovely 16th century manor house presented as would have been in 1645, with beautiful formal gardens and grounds. Said to be haunted, there are ghost tours and ghost watch events to test its reputation for paranormal activity. Even older is the Roman fort at nearby Gelligaer.
There are also a number of scenic country parks and open spaces to enjoy in the local area, in contrast to the days when the coal industry dominated the area. These include Parc Penallta, a lovely site created from a derelict former coal mine spoil tip and boasting a fantastic sculpture of a pit pony, which at 200m long is the largest earth sculpture in the UK.
