New Tredegar is an interesting small town set in the Rhymney Valley, one of the valleys of South Wales formerly dominated by the coal mining industry.
Among these mines was Elliot Colliery, which in the late 19th century produced over a million tons of coal a year. The pits closed in the mid 20th century, but the buildings have beem converted into an excellent local museum telling the fascinating story of the mines and the people who worked in them.
The Rhymney Valley is close to the mountainous Brecon Beacons but has some great areas for walking in its own right. These include Parc Cwm Darran with its scenic lake, and Parc Coetir Bargod which was created from former mineworks, yet another symbol of the rebirth of this industrial landscape.
