Kidwelly tourist information
Kidwelly is an ancient town dominated by its mighty Norman castle and fortifications.
The castle was largely constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries, and set in fantastic defensive position above the River Gwendraeth. Now ruined, the massive stone towers, walls and gatehouse are still complete enough to give a great impression of early medieval life. It is also famous for the unsuccessful uprising in 1136 lead by Gwenllian ferch Gruffydd, known as the Welsh Boudica.
The town has an old-fashioned feel, a pretty Norman church and old stone bridge. It was also a hub for coal mining and tin-plate production during the industrial revolution, and the Kidwelly Industrial Museum celebrates this rich heritage.
Travelling south, Pembrey Country Park is a large green space set on the glorious coastline with woodland walks, nature trails, the beautiful golden sands of Cefn Sidan beach and a huge range of outdoor activities such as dry-ski slope, golf and miniature railway.
