The castle was begun in 1480 by Lord Hastings, a man of great substance and power.

The castle consisted of a rectangular courtyard enclosing the main living rooms protected by towers, gatehouse and moat. It was one of the first to be constructed from brick. A drawbridge, portcullis and two sets of doors protected the entrance.

However, in 1483 before work had been completed, Lord Hastings was seized by the usurping Richard of Gloucester and executed.

His widow continued the work, but in only a limited way.

The three-storeyed west tower was completed and today is the only well-preserved building.
