The great tower was built by Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick in 1170. It is surrounded by 13th and 14th century curtain walls and lodgings.
The castle became the home of Richard III when he was made Lord of the North.
It became one of the strongest fortresses in the north, but it later became uninhabited and many of its stones were used for local buildings.
