The imposing great tower was built on a high motte in the 12th century. It commands a dominating position over the city of Norwich.
Over the years it has been greatly altered and in 1834 the keep was refaced in Bath stone.
For 650 years it served as a prison but in 1894 it was turned into a museum and remains so today.
