In 1284 Robert Burnell was given a licence to crenellate.
He was the bishop of Bath and Wells and favourite Chancellor of Edward I.
The Burnell family had held the manor in Shropshire for a hundred years but now, for a short period, it became a grand estate.
The castle was constructed of red sandstone and consisted of a central two-storey building containing all of the principal rooms. The projecting towers at the corners served as stairways, chapel and service rooms.
In 1420 the male line of the Burnell family died out.
The castle was abandoned and became a ruin. The building passed through various hands but the name has always reflected its original owners.
