Belsay Castle is a late 14th century tower house.

The fortification was not built to house a large household or to withstand a siege but to defend the owner against the low level warfare of the region. There was a fighting gallery at roof level equipped with machicolations and corbelled out angle turrets of French influence.

The attached house was added in the early 17th century.
