The site comprises a 12th century great tower with surrounding buildings and courtyard. The tower was heightened in the latter part of the 13th century.
The surrounding lodgings were added from the 13th to the 17th centuries.
Restoration was carried out by the immensely wealthy Anne Clifford, Countess of Dorset, Pembroke and Montgomery who died at nearby Brougham Castle in 1678.
