The site is close to Castle Acre Priory, a great Cluniac monastery, now ruined.
The first motte was raised by the Earls of Surrey in around 1080. The wooden fortification was not replaced with stone until the 11th or 12th century.
Great earthworks were dug to protect the castle.
Today only ruins remain of the castle and there is debate as to whether the walls of the rectangular building found at the top of the mound would have been strong enough to support a great keep such as Norwich or Castle Rising.
However the real scale of the building will not be certain until further excavation work is carried out.
