Walmer Castle was built to a simple plan with a circular tower protected by a quatrefoil outer wall.

It also was well supplied with artillery to face an enemy at any angle.

The castle is the official residence of the Warden of The Cinque Ports.

Deal and Walmer are two of the forts built when England was threatened by attack by France and Spain.
