| Off A4 north of Newbury Built as a fortified residence in the 14th century. John Packer had the castle taken by Royalists in the Civil War. In 1643 Charles I entrusted the castle to Colonel John Boys, who added to it. In 1644 a twenty month bombardment resulted in four of its towers in ruins. In 1646 Parliament voted to demolish the castle, John Packer reclaimed his residence, all that remained was the ruined gatehouse. more information |
| West of London off M4 or M25 Overlooking the River Thames, 1075, the oldest continuously occupied royal residence, and a many monarchs between the 12th and 20th century have made modifications .The Knights of the Garter claim St George's Chapel as their place of worship. George IV had the castle modernised in the 1820's. In 1993 a devastating fire broke out during maintenance work, St George's Hall was destroyed but has been rebuit. more information |
