 | 9.5 miles south-east of Chester, off A49 Built by the Earl of Chester, 1220, consisting of two circuits of walls. In 1237 the castle passed to Henry III and used as a prison. Edward II added to it and by his murder, in 1327, it was almost complete. During the Civil War it was besieged, starvation forcing surrender. more information |
