mile south east of Penrith just off A66 Built
around 1170 on the banks of the Eamont. Added to mainly in the 17th century, becoming
the property of Anne Clifford, Countess of Dorset, Pembroke and Montgomery. The castle is
now in ruins although the great tower is still impressive. more

Carlisle Castle |
Carlisle
20 miles north of Penrith, off M6 It always
played a vital part in Britain's history due to its location.Begun in 1092, extended
by Henry I it fell to Scottish hands,although reclaimed by Henry II, and besieged by the
Scottish king ,William the Lion. Much altered and restored, now it houses the museum of
the Border Regiment & King's Own Royal Border Regiment. more
