Barnard Castle |

miles west of Darlington, on A67 Established in the 11th century, with areas
rebuilt in the 14th century. Its history is of disputed ownership, becoming Scottish after
a siege by Alexander II. In 1296, the Prince-Bishops seized the castle. Later the
castle was given by Edward I to the Earl of Warwick, and then was owned by Richard

Durham Castle |

miles south of Newcastle upon Tyne, off A167 Norman, 1072,
the Bishop had the responsibility of the cathedral and fortress. The
Prince-Bishops had absolute power, in return they had to levy an army
for the King. Only the chapel and part of the Great Hall survive. Last
addition was made after the Civil War, remaining as a episcipal palace
until 1832. In the 1930's a rescue operation was carried out to
underpin subsiding foundations. Despite rebuilding the nucleus
of a medieval city remains .

Raby Castle |

miles north-west of Darlington, off A688 King Canute's mansion, his descendants,
the Neville family, lived here until the 16th century .In 1569 the Nevilles were part of
the rebellion against Elizabeth I., and the land was seized by the Crown until 1626.
The castle was bought by Sir Henry Vane, republicans, so the castle survived the Civil
War. more
