Colchester Castle |

miles south of Ipswich, off A12 On the site of a Roman temple
it has the largest keep in Europe. Started about 1080, completed
by the 12th century. It became a prison and in 1683 was bought
by John Wheeley who dismantled the building. In the 19th century,
acquired by Charles Gray, a museum was established and in 1931 galleries
were created for Roman and British artifacts. more

Hedingham Castle |

west of Sudbury on B1058 12th century fortress but it is one
of the best preserved in Europe. During the Magna Carter Wars the
owner Robert de Vere sided against King John, and it was attacked.
The castle was returned to Robert de Vere and his family continued to
own the castle until 1703 .more
