Burnell family held the manor in Shropshire for a hundred years and
it became a grand estate.In 1420 the male line of the Burnell family
died out and the castle was abandoned.

a romantic ruined castle , today you can clearly make out the original
plan of the castle. The ditch and two heavily defended baileys

Ludlow Castle |

miles north of Leominster, off A49 On cliffs overlooking the
River Teme, the castle is the most strategic fortification on the Welsh
borders. Started around 1085 by Roger de Lacy with improvements
in the 1130's, and the 14th century. When a member of the Mortimer
family was crowned Edward IV the castle became a royal property.

outskirts of Shawbury, on A53 north of Shrewsbury. From Shawbury
follow signs for Wem, signposted 1 mile outside Shawbury. There are
two ruins - a 13th century keep and an Elizabethan mansion The eerie
ruins of of the castle are said to be haunted by a ghost. An English

Oorignally a wooden fortification,
the red standstone castle was built by Roger de Montgomery. The
castle was restored as much as possible to its Edwardian condition
and opened to the public in 1926. The castle is a popular venue
for weddings and the grounds are frequently used for outdoor events

13th century north tower is the oldest part of the castle, improved
by Laurence de Ludlow and in the 17th century. Following this period
the castle declined. Since the 19th century it has been maintained
and has the appearance of a classic manor house.

3 miles north-east of Oswestry, A495. In
12 acres of land, this ruined Marches castle is only one mile from
the vast Iron Age hill fort of Old Oswestry. The small rural
community of Whittington has acquired a 99 year lease to manage the
castle, which stands at the centre of the village.
