Orford Castle |

miles east of Woodbridge, off B1084 Built between 1166 and 1172 by Henry II as
part of his coastal defence. After the death of King John it was taken by the French
contender to the crown, Prince Louis. In the reign of Henry III the castle changed
hands frequently and then maintained by the Crown but by 1336 its importance had declined
and given to Robert of Ufford. more information |
Framlington Castle |

miles north-east of Ipswich, on B119 off the A12 The ruins
date from the 12th Century,after Roger Bigod, Earl of Norfolk, restored
damage and added to it after Henry III ordered its destruction 1177. It
became the seat of the Mowbray family and later the Howards, dukes of
Norfolk. In 1636 it was given to Pembroke College, Cambridge and
the great hall and other buildings were gradually pulled down, the poor-house
lasted for 200 years after which it was used as a court. more
