Claypotts castle
is one of the best preserved examples of the Scottish Z-plan tower house. It was built in 1570 and has a central square tower with two adjoining round towers diagonally opposite each other. One round tower connects with the south-west corner of the central tower whilst the other connects with the north-east corner. The castle has uniquely projecting garrets above its towers. Gun loops were distributed around the castle and including one at the back of the kitchen fireplace. The castle was designed to deter local attacks rather than a major siege. The shape of the castle meant that defenders were able to fire their weapons across all the angles of the building. As a result any attacker approaching the castle too closely would be exposed to gunfire. The three linked towers rose to four storeys with 16 separate rooms. The kitchen and storerooms were found on the ground floor and the upper floors were used as spacious accommodation for the Laird and his family. Today the castle is overlooked by a modern housing development. |
